As Congress tackles a long-term reauthorization bill for the FAA, it’s time to tackle a hotly debated topic in flight training: Increasing the number of hours a pilot can log as part of the 1,500 hours the FAA requires to become an Airline Transport Pilot. “Structural or airframe icing, the focus of this video, is a major cold-weather hazard, especially for instrument-rated pilots who fly in instrument meteorological conditions. This type of icing causes about five accidents a year with nearly half being fatal,” said Air Safety Institute Senior Director Paul Deres.
