Flight training regulations need to be updated

As Congress tackles a long-term reauthorization bill for the FAA, it’s time to tackle a hotly debated topic in flight training: Increasing the number of hours a pilot can log as part of the 1,500 hours the FAA requires to become an Airline Transport Pilot.

New video offers tips to avoid and escape ice

“Structural or airframe icing, the focus of this video, is a major cold-weather hazard, especially for instrument-rated pilots who fly in instrument meteorological conditions. This type of icing causes about five accidents a year with nearly half being fatal,” said Air Safety Institute Senior Director Paul Deres.

Dr. Ron Bingham’s hangar at at McKeller-Sipes Regional Airport (KMKL) in Jackson, Tennessee, has a 70-foot by 16-foot Schweiss Doors hydraulic door equipped with remote openers. He keeps a CJ1 and a Cirrus SR22 in the new hangar.

 
 

New tool for TBM pilots debuts

The Personal IPC Flight (P-IPC) allows TBM pilots to self assess their IFR proficiency using a software-based assessment tool.

Formation flight ends fatally

The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from terrain while intentionally maneuvering in a canyon at low altitude. Contributing to the accident was the pilot’s decision to enter a canyon environment at a low altitude, and the sudden change in wind conditions within the canyon.
