Misfueling and a fuel-related aircraft accident illustrate the risks created at Reid-Hillview Airport in California, which stopped selling 100LL at the beginning of 2022. AOPA and other stakeholders cited safety in response to Santa Clara County’s motion to dismiss our complaint.

Airport Focus

The Civil Air Patrol Northeast Arkansas Composite Squadron will hold an open house and recruitment drive at Jonesboro Municipal Airport on Saturday to promote awareness of the organization and gain new volunteers for ground team and air crew positions. A CAP Cessna C-172 airplane will be on view at the event, and members will be demonstrating the squadron’s equipment.

Besides sustainable aviation fuel, experts say another way to make the aviation industry greener is to improve jet engine efficiency. Efforts include additive prototyping to more rapidly develop efficient engine parts such as turbine blades and a focus on other factors, such as reducing high-altitude contrails that tend to trap heat in the atmosphere.

Pilot Spotlight

Pilot Christopher Trahan, 71, has completed 98 volunteer missions for Pilots for Patients, a nonprofit based in Louisiana that provides free transportation for people in need of medical treatment. Trahan says volunteering is "one of the most rewarding things I have ever done" and urges other pilots to consider joining the organization.

Policy Watch

The Federal Aviation Administration estimates that it will cost $26 million to retrofit aircraft so they can avoid interference from 5G wireless transmissions, and that only about 1,000 aircraft require new equipment. The agency recently proposed a deadline of Feb. 24, 2024 for the modifications.
