Beta Technologies says its electric conventional takeoff and landing aircraft, CX300, will offer a less expensive option for pilots compared with conventional aviation fuel. United Therapeutics, Air New Zealand and Bristow have committed to buy the aircraft, which is still in the certification stage.

Airport Focus

The Commemorative Air Force will host the Barnstormer Saturday Fly-In at Greenville Municipal Airport – Majors Field in Greenville, Texas, on May 20. A variety of vintage and historic airplanes will be on view, including an Aero Commander L26B that flew as Air Force One for President Dwight D. Eisenhower and a Douglas R4D "Ready For Duty," and rides will be available on several aircraft.

A safety information bulletin has been released by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency to warn aviators of an increase in spoofing or jamming of global navigation satellite systems, which can lead to an inability to land safely. "This issue particularly affects the geographical areas surrounding conflict zones but is also present in the eastern Mediterranean, Baltic Sea, and Arctic area," the bulletin said.

Pilot Spotlight

US Air Force Maj. Lauren Olme has logged over nine hours in a supersonic aircraft, one of the first pilots who has achieved this while pregnant since the Air Force changed its policy to allow aviators to fly through the second trimester. "I can’t overexpress how amazing it is that pregnant women now have the opportunity to fly in all types of aircraft," said Olme.

The Biden administration has reiterated its support for the nomination of Denver airport CEO Phil Washington to head the Federal Aviation Administration after Republicans criticized his lack of technical knowledge, noting that only one major US airline is headed by a former pilot. "It bears noting that leadership success in a field often comes without granular, technical knowledge," said John Putnam, general counsel of the Transportation Department, adding: "The fresh perspective he will bring to his top-to-bottom assessment of the FAA’s culture and operations will be a benefit."
