A prototype of Redbird Flight's new desktop mixed-reality flight simulator is on view at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., and consists of a basic aviation training device, a Varjo mixed reality headset and Quantum 3D image-generation system. The system is intended to offer a more immersive flying experience at a more affordable cost for high-school and college aviation programs.

Airport Focus

Plum Island Airport in Newburyport, Mass., utilized a grant from the state's Department of Transportation to undergo a nearly $2 million project to repave the runway and add perimeter landscaping. In addition to serving small airplanes and providing flight training, the airport houses a museum that reflects the site's rich aviation history, dating to the Wright Brothers era.

International News

Bell is mulling an international market for the 360 Invictus helicopter currently under development for the US Army Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft requirement. "I don't want to talk about specific countries, but the attributes of the Invictus should appeal to most air forces and/or armies [that operate helicopter gunships]," said Bell's Chris Gehler during the Farnborough International Airshow.

Pilot Spotlight

Six aviators who earned their sport pilot certificates through an Able Flight scholarship program will be honored at a July 26 ceremony during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. The pilots earning their wings all use wheelchairs and received training from Purdue University flight instructors to fly specially equipped light sport airplanes.
