During EAA AirVenture, Opener showed the maneuvering capabilities of its BlackFly single-seat electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, which is currently undergoing flight testing and is expected to cost around the same price as an SUV. Also on view was the AIR One, a two-seat electric aircraft that has a range of 60 to 100 miles and is expected to earn Federal Aviation Administration certification in the second half of 2024.

Wheels Up logged 82,478 flight hours in the first half of the year, which is by far the highest of any Part 135 operator in the US, according to Argus’ TraqPak Mid-Year Business Aviation Report. Five years after taking his first Young Eagles flight, Benson Milam, 17, of Calhoun, Ga., is now a private pilot who flew all the way to EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., an 11-hour trip with seven stops each way for refueling.
