News of the day

During EAA AirVenture, Opener showed the maneuvering capabilities of its BlackFly single-seat electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, which is currently undergoing flight testing and is expected to cost around the same price as an SUV. Also on view was the AIR One, a two-seat electric aircraft that has a range of 60 to 100 miles and is expected to earn Federal Aviation Administration certification in the second half of 2024.

Aviation Update

Wheels Up logged 82,478 flight hours in the first half of the year, which is by far the highest of any Part 135 operator in the US, according to Argus’ TraqPak Mid-Year Business Aviation Report. Coming in second place was Executive Jet Management, with 39,410 hours, followed by Solairus Aviation, XO and Exclusive Jets.

Airport Focus

A 40,000-square-foot hangar is under construction at Kissimmee Gateway Airport in Florida, with the project expected to be part of a larger expansion effort. The new facility, which will be leased by Mach1 Aviation for an initial 30-year term, will include four hangar bays that each come with office space.

Alaska and North Carolina are among states whose departments of transportation are seeing the benefits of autonomous drones from Skydio to monitor and inspect bridges and highways. New York and West Virginia transportation officials also have ventured into drone inspections to lower costs and improve safety.

International News

Volkswagen unveiled an electric vertical takeoff and landing prototype, the Flying Tiger, that eventually will serve as a robotaxi to transport passengers between congested cities in China. The fully autonomous aircraft can carry four and travel 120 miles.

Pilot Spotlight

Five years after taking his first Young Eagles flight, Benson Milam, 17, of Calhoun, Ga., is now a private pilot who flew all the way to EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., an 11-hour trip with seven stops each way for refueling. Milam is enrolled in a Federal Aviation Administration airframe and powerplant program and hopes to mentor and inspire other young people interested in aviation.
